Training for new flyers

Learning from an instructor is the way to go. And for those of you who are already firmly established in the hobby, the future is in training others. Young or old, boys or girls, men or ladies, if they have a love of things that fly in the air, this hobby is for you and them.

The process is relatively simple. Two transmitters are connected together in a “buddy box” system. That can be either via a cable or by radio signal. Initially the instructor gets the plane up to a safe height, then gives control to the student. When it starts doing something that it ought not to do, the instructor takes control back, gets the plane back level at a safe altitude, and the process continues.

To learn more about how to learn to fly a radio-controlled airplane, watch our video:

And, along the way, you will probably want to know some of the potential pitfalls to watch out for!

So, if you want to learn, Google to find a RC flying club near you, make contact and arrange for a visit. If you are wanting to be an instructor, there probably are organizations in your country to provide training for you. In either case, you might find the document below helpful. If it is, consider “Buy me a coffee” as a way of saying “thank you” for what I am giving you freely. Click on the button below, and it will give you the options:

  1. Hi Jim,

Let me say biggest THANK YOU which I could express for providing your series of trainings. This has been a blessings for me.

I am a newbe at RC coming back to small planes after 50 years. In my retirement I got engaged with RC. After first attemps and successful flights on FlySky FSi6x I decided for TX16S and was ovewhelmed at the first try. I got scared to find complicated system and even trying to follow some video tutorials. This was untill I found your channel. Since than everything changed!

You are a great presenter. The way you explain things, your language, the speed of presentation made me open my eyes to working with my new radio. I am still at beginning but already was able to program first models and slowly discover the radio without fear:)

I believe and hope to be able to follow more in depth ypur trainings and learn about all aspects of flying.

To close let me say YOU are great inspiration for me. As a Christian having not so “spiritual” passion you became a blessing for so many. There is certain amount of love and empohaty for listeners when you present things and I believe this is the flow of God’s love through you. Blessings Brother.

I am, a retired guy from Poland trying to enjoy again this what had been my love and passion 50+ years ago.

    With compliments

      1. Jim,

What a privileg to contact you and find about you. When I read a section “About Jim” I was amazed how much our lives were related. To say other words our stories went the same way.

In my early years I was overwhelmed by planes and built dozens scale paper models. In 1967 I built my first line controlled plane. I manged to make successful maiden flight and it was like a step into paradise. Since than I developed fast in a club and got real achievements in Combat, Aerobatics and Scale models. when approaching 18y I understood, I must take serious decision. Either committ my full time into models and aim at mastership or follow what the Bible says. I prayed and let it go. It was so simple… no pain of loosing something. Just new perspectives. I completed education, married, got two children… In between also I took responsibility for a small baptist church which finally lead to my real vocation. Lord called me to start a Christian Bookstore still during last years of communism. Long story…..Since 1999 I became engaged with Samaritan’s Purse and shoeboxes. for 20 years untill retirement I managed distribution network in 14 East European countries. So, missionary life for 30 years.

Inbetween I had short difficult time of depression and again the Lord was gracious and showed me way out and gave another joy and passion toward water sports and particularly windsurfing. This I enjoy untill now.

2022 I turned 70 and my family made me a gift an RC model Sky Surfer. The joy from the past returned as I also resurected two my best LC models which were moving with us for 50 years. With RC was more difficult and many crushes. I am in a club but there are no very close relations with guys and not too much support. But I made some progress. Built dozen of models and some my own construction. these all have been repaired after touch downs and now are in flight condition. So I decided for next step of development and bought a more advanced radio. At present I managed with your help to programm first five models and learning. I am looking forward toward a good weather which takes patience. We have winter.

Again. Thank you so, so much for your encouragement and for your wonderful ministry. Blessings for you and your family.

        Alek

      2. Hi Alek,
That’s amazing, thank you for sharing. I’m now 73 and am very much enjoying my new informal ministry in retirement. We have a very active RC flying club, and the guys are very kind and helpful, and also somewhat open to my attempts to share the Lord with them.
May the Lord bless you and your family.
        Regards,
        Jim
